After Adoption: The Lifelong Journey

Adoption is a journey from the very first call about adoption to placement of your child and beyond. The adoption process is often time consuming and emotional. With the joys of parenting also come the struggles of raising a child. Most adoptive families walk into parenting with minimal bumps in the road while others may have to deal with hills and sometimes mountains to climb.

There are no guarantees when is comes to any child, whether joining your family through birth or adoption. Adoption does come with some added challenges including loss of family history, dealing with abandonment issues, and struggles with identity and attachment concerns for your adoptive child.

It is difficult to ask for help when problems arise, but dealing with a concern early saves your time and energy. You may feel that if you ask for help that you are admitting failure, but asking for help is the sign of a strong and resourceful parent. Too many adoptive families wait until the behaviors or emotional energy has used up all their resources and they are ready to “throw in the towel.” Your adoptive child may come to you having experienced abuse, neglect, and traumas that result in emotional, mental, or behavioral disabilities. Seeking assistance early can alleviate future heartache and sorrow while creating a support network for you as a parent and helping your child to overcome their challenges in life.
