Types of Adoption

 
Definition
A birth mother creates an adoption plan and often chooses which family adopts her child/infant (the birth father may also be involved in this process).





A relative adopts.
"Relative" means a parent, grandparent, stepparent, brother, sister, first cousin, nephew, niece, uncle or aunt, who is related to the child by either birth or in most situations by marriage
Wisconsin Statutes: .48.02(15)
A child from another country is adopted and becomes a Citizen of the United States. A single person or a couple adopt a child from the child welfare system.

2 days-1 month Any age Ages 6 months-1 year Most children range btw ages 5-18 years old.
Approximate Cost

Domestic:
$12,000-$25,000 (Typically)

Private:
$10,000-$30,000 (Typically)

$550-$3,000
Depends on the county and agency
$25,000-$50,000 Depending on the country and travel $1,500-$3,500

Who Can Adopt?

Anyone Can Adopt
(Trends show birth parents are choosing adoptive parents in their mid 20s and lower 30s)

See “Definition” above Each country has its own set of policies. (Please contact your agency for more information.) The State of Wisconsin cannot discriminate against age, race, sex, or sexual orientation. Any family considered safe and appropriate can adopt.
How Long Will It Take? Depends on the Case.

Typically 6 months-2 years.

(Includes homestudy & placement)


Usually will involve four steps: termination of parental rights, petition to adopt and order for investigation, the agency investigation, and the hearing on the adoption.

Time involved is dependent on a case by case basis.

4-6 months for a Homestudy

Waiting Time/Placement is Dependent on the Country. (Ex. China is 2-3 years.)

8 months to 2 years.
