Untitled Document Step-Parent/Relative Adoption

Another form of adoption in Wisconsin is adoption by a step parent or relative. Step parent adoptions typically occur when a spouse petitions the court to become the legal parent of their spouse’s child. Relatives adopt children for various circumstances but typically do so to allow children to maintain family bonds and connections.

In order to adopt as either a relative or step-parent in Wisconsin, you will be required to have a home study completed by a licensed adoption agency. The process of adopting a child who is a relative usually involves four steps:

  • Termination of parental rights
  • Petition to adopt and order for investigation
  • Agency investigation
  • Court hearing on adoption

For more information about the specifics related to the steps outlined above go to the Wisconsin Department of Children and Families website at: http://dcf.wisconsin.gov/children/adoption/RELSTEP.HTM
