Adoption for Gay and Lesbian Families
In Wisconsin, many gay and lesbian people have created families through adoption and foster care. It has become much more socially acceptable than in the past, however some obstacles still exit. Under Wisconsin law, a child cannot have two legal moms or two legal dads. If you are part of a partnership, one of you can apply to adopt as a single parent. (And often the other parent becomes a legal guardian.)
Please contact the Wisconsin Adoption Information Center at (414) 475-1246 or (800) 762-8063 for a list of agencies that are willing to work with gay couples and singles. Also please see our article on single parent adoptions for more information on the adoption process for single applicants. Below is a list of resources for professionals and parents on gay and lesbian adoptive parenting. This list is provided courtesy of the Child Welfare Information Gateway. You can access their website at www.childwelfare.gov.
