Steps to Adoption in
Wisconsin
1. Learn About Adoption
Read about adoption, contact agencies,
ask questions and absorb as much information as you can.
2. Assess Your Reasons for Adopting
Take time to think about your family situation and whether adopting
a child is a good choice. Do you like children as well as babies? Do
you have experience with children? How will your family feel if you
adopt a child? These are just a few questions to consider.
3. Decide What Type of Adoption To Pursue
Look into the different types of adoption and choose the type that best fits
your needs as a parent.
4. Select an Adoption Agency
Contact at least three adoption agencies
and discuss their adoption programs. Find out what the requirements are
for parents, what children they have available for adoption, how long
the process takes and what the costs are. You may also want to ask for
references/people who have gone through their agency’s program.
5. Submit an Application
Complete and submit an application to adopt from the agency that you
have chosen.
6. Attend Training Classes
Attending trainings will help you learn about the challenges and joys
of adoption.
7. Complete the Home Study
Process
Work with your social worker to complete a home study. It will evaluate
your family’s ability to parent a child.
8. Prepare For Your Child’s Arrival
Prepare your home for a new child. Locate a pediatrician, set up day care
and learn as much as you can about your child and his or her background.
